Lazy heifer, that's me

le sigh

The procrastinator strikes again.

I got my grocery list done on time but my lazy behind didn't leave the house until noonish. Also I forgot my ID to go on post so I decided just to hit up wallyworld where I ended up buying more crap than I needed at higher prices than I should have because I didn't bother to comparison shop between Kroger and Walmart and buy accordingly the way I usually do when I don't go to the commissary.

Did you get all that?

So uhm, yeah, what should have been a cheaper run since I had a lot of the stuff on hand, including $10 worth of salmon on sale at Food Lion, ended up costing me about $140 for all the groceries plus the $20 produce box. Add in the aforementioned salmon and we are at $170 all because I didn't feel like getting my ass off the computer and/or looking for my ID card.

Blargh!

So here's the rundown:

Thursday: Char siu and pork fried rice with garlicky green beans - because none of this was cooked last week. Pete had a slumber party and I was feeling lazy so mr man ate leftover and the pinkermeister and I chowed down on some quarter pounders.

Friday: Sausage w/peppers and egg noodles - also a leftover meal from last week as the enchiladas and spanish rice lasted until the next day.

Saturday Breakfast: Applesauce pancakes, ham, and apple cider

Saturday: Chicken and corn chowder with bread sticks and salad

Monday: BBQ Chicken, Twice baked potato casserole, and corn

Tuesday: Ginger Soy Salmon, rice, and roasted brussel sprouts.

I'd love to ramble on about this week's shopping trip but I've just been informed that the girl child launched a box of bisquick in her brother's direction, which would be all find and dandy had not the box been previously opened and the bag holding the bisquick been rolled down.

You people are going to think I don't even like them, aren't you?

See? I like them . . . usually.

Yummy food

I have a love hate relationship with grocery shopping. I adore having a plan, knowing that I'm going to cook, walking in the store with a list that's written according to how I might find those items in the store. However, I procrastinate like a mother heifer when it comes to actually making the list, to actually getting to the store. The plan is supposed to see my behind getting up and getting dressed like a decent human and then heading out to the commissary as soon as mr man get home from work.

Instead, he walks through the door at 9:30 and I'm snuggled under the covers, braless, watching a crappy movie with Keira Knightley, and resisting the urge to strangle my dog for incessantly licking the stupid blanket. And nope, I wasn't exactly itching to crawl out of there either.

But I have crockpot dinner planned for tonight and if I didn't get back in time, well, what's the point of using the crockpot if you aren't going to give that crap time to do . . . well crockpot stuff?

Thank God for bad movies. My irritation over the crappy plot and disappointing costuming was just what I needed to get me going for the day. I mean seriously, the movie was called Silk and set in 19th century France and yet there were no decent gowns to speak of, just the an interesting bit of smocked cotton sleeve. No wonder Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 7%.

Okay, so the color is pretty too.

I was so annoyed by the lack of Victorian Era (or whatever they call it in France) fashion that I left the house in disgust without eating.

It's never a good idea to go grocery shopping on an empty stomach, particularly when your grocery store of choice thinks it's a brilliant idea to shove all the chocolate, oreos, fancy butter cookies from Austria, and gingerbread baking mixes right up in the doorway, taunting you, calling to you like a long, lost, tasty friend.

But I held firm. I bought only what was on my list . . . until I got to the bread aisle and spied a tasty chocolate muffin. Then I broke.

I did manage to talk myself out of the McDonald's drive thru window so hooray for small victories.

And that's my long, drawn out introduction to this week's menu.

Thursday: Crockpot Teriyaki chicken (you have to scroll down to find it.)
Friday: Funeral Sandwiches and munchos
Saturday Breakfast: Pancakes and Sausage (mr man is out of town so creativity is for the birds this weekend)
Saturday: Sausage, peppers, and potatoes
Sunday: Spaghetti and meatballs, salad, cornbread twists, and the hummingbird cake I didn't make last week because I was tired after going ice skating and/or being a lazy heifer
Monday: Meatball subs and sweet potato fries (tator tots for boring old mr man)
Tuesday: Beef and barley soup

I spent $122.82 but I also bought $10 worth of paper towels and baby food. But the commissary didn't have any sub rolls, I forgot to put frozen veggies for the soup on my list and I realized after putting away the groceries that we have three eggs. But that's still under $150 so . . .

This week's menu

I'm totally a day late and a dollar short this week. Blame it on Labor Day and the U.S. Army.

I've started shopping at the commissary on post again since Mr Man is in the guard and was going on my usual Sunday after church when I've had time to peruse the sales flyers and make my list accordingly. However, Monday is the commissary's stocking day which means everything there on Sunday is slim pickings. The meat department resembles the Zombie Apocalypse two days after patient zero started gnawing on faces. Since meat is the primary reason I go to the commissary, I decided to change my shopping day to Tuesday.

However, the commissary is closed on Mondays due to the aforementioned stocking day. When there's a holiday on Monday, they close on Tuesday as well. So I didn't grocery shop until Wednesday. Why I'm not blogging about it until today? Well, you know how I roll . . .

So, onto the list. I actually spent a bit more than I planned to this week. However, that's because there were a couple deals I couldn't pass up as well as some deals where I needed to buy a bit more in order to use my handy dandy coupons. But I still came in pretty close at about $160. Of course I can't find the stupid receipts but would you rather have pics of receipts eventually or a blog post now?

I'll get better, I swear.

Thursday: Sausage Rotini with broccoli and garlic bread

Friday: Honey Lime Shrimp with broccoli, red pepper, and rice

Saturday: Crockpot chicken and noodle soup with fresh bread (HA! I'm not even sure why I'm trying. I bet money my lazy behind ends up picking up some at Kroger and calling it good. If mr man is lucky, I'll hit up the cute bakery up the street and get some rosemary ciabatta bread.

Sunday: PICNIC TIME!! Steak and veggie wraps, fruit salad, and maybe potato salad.

Monday:  Cuban Flank Steak over rice

Tuesday: Chili Colorado Burritos Enchiladas

It's gonna be a good week.

Week One: For real

Can you read my chicken scratch? This is what my grocery list looks like, or at least that's what it looks like when I actually stop being a lazy heifer, sit my behind down, and come up with a menu plan.

Again, it's not a difficult prospect. I simply look about the kitchen to find out what ingredients I'm sitting on then dig out my myriad of cook books and "ladies" magazines and try to work at least some of those ingredients into my recipe choices. The key to the last part is some of those ingredients. If I worked them all in, I'd only spend $60 for the week. However, I'd end up spending $200 the next week replacing them. There's probably some deep thought I'm missing that would keep this phenomenon from occuring but this works.

So here's what we're eating/have eaten.

Sunday: London Broil aka my mama style, sour cream and herb potatoes, and garlic greenie beanies (yes, I call them that. I also call pinky greenie beanie.) There was also a Tandy Cake involved which may or may not be 2/3rds decimated already. Look, a dessert that tastes like a Tagalong is a dangerous thing, mmkay?

Monday: Steak Salad featuring leftover London Broil, feta, grape tomatoes, cucumber, romaine, and balsamic vinaigrette

Tuesday: Grilled Pork Chops and Spanish Rice

Wednesday: Vegetable Beef Soup with cornbread. This is one of my favorite recipes as I can usually make it on the cheap using tidbits from other meals. The half a box of chicken broth that remained when I made the pinto beans, leftover meatballs/manwich/meatballs, or in this case, a quarter pound or so of ground beef nicked off the meat I'm using for sloppy joes. Add a can of crushed tomatoes and a bag or two of frozen veggies and you're golden. You can also clean out leftover veggies this way.

Thursday: Sweet and Tangy Chicken with barley and peas, recipe courtesy of an issue of Recipe.com magazine. It's my first time trying this and if it tastes decent, I'll post the recipe. If not, we'll forget this ever happened. LOL Ooo, it just occured to me that I can put some barley in my soup. I adore double duty.

Friday: Sloppy Joes, Parmesan Oven Fries, and yes, MORE BROCCOLI SLAW!

Saturday: Possible leftovers/Undecided

My grand shopping trip total was $135.00, a number that doesn't exactly please me. I prefer to come in at about a hundred or so, leaving me $50 for more milk and stupid items I managed to forget (like the queso fresca that is responsible for the return trip to Kroger mere hours after the big shopping trip.) However, when you need diapers, charcoal, batteries, paper towels, and toilet paper all in the same week, these things happen.

So there you have it. At the end of the week, I'll update with how it went and if we spent any extra money.
